Ultrasound imaging, also called ultrasound scanning (US) or sonography, is a method of obtaining pictures or images from different organs inside the human body. It is painless, radiation-free, safe examination without side effects. It is the most commonly used diagnostic imaging method. US is also widely used for screening. Please see detailed description on our Diagnostics pages. General Ultrasound Examinations Abdominal ultrasound examinations Lower abdomen ultrasound examinations Pelvic ultrasound examinations
Adequate preparation for the US examination increases its efficiency. The preparation depends on the reason for the ultrasound scan. For ultrasound of the liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas and aorta, you may be asked to eat a fat-free meal on the evening before the test and then to avoid eating for 6 to 12 hours before the test (not even coffee). You can take your chronic medicines with a very small amount of water. For ultrasound of the kidneys, you may not need any special preparation. You may be asked to drink 4 to 6 glasses of water about an hour before the test to fill your bladder. Ultrasound of the neck (thyroid gland, salivary glands, soft tissue) Doppler of the carotid arteries Doppler of the arterial and venous circulation of limbs The Doppler examinations are very important for diagnosing arteriosclerosis and venal thrombosis. Both processes cause vasoconstriction (a narrowing of the blood vessels) and may lead to restriction of blood flow in severe cases.. Soft tissue ultrasound examination Ultrasound scan of joints and limbs Ultrasound of breasts Ultrasound of the breasts is an investigative technology used for taking a closer look at areas of your breast that your doctor still has questions about after doing a mammogram and clinical breast exam. Often, breast abnormalities that are suspected to be cancerous after a mammogram can be identified as benign with a follow-up ultrasound examination. Axillary ultrasound scan Suprapubic ultrasound scan Testicular ultrasound scan
Newborn/ infant ultrsound screening
The complete newborn screening comprises all these tests. These are extemely important for the early detection, diagnosis and treatment of potentially devastating congenital problems.
The examinations are not painful or harmful and do not pose any risks to the baby. Please see details here. Other ultrsound examinations Ultrasound scan evaluation based on scans made elsewhere Obstetric and gyncologic ultrasound - within the obstetric and gynecologic consultation Cardiac ultrasound - within the cardiology consultation Urologic ultrasound (kidneys, urinary tract) - within urologic consultation
